Soil Monitoring Law moving forward

The Council and the European Parliament have entered trilogues on the Soil Monitoring Law in October 2024. The first EU legislation on soils is crucial for promoting healthy soils, the foundation of sustainable agriculture.

Embracing sustainable soil management practices, like organic farming, would help the EU achieve its goal of restoring soil health in the EU by 2050.

Organic farming and healthy soils go hand in hand. Organic farmers build soil fertility while protecting biodiversity, ensuring water quality and preventing pollution. How? Organic farmers do not use synthetic pesticides and fertilisers which contaminate our soils and water bodies (and are bad for our health). On top of that, organic farming stores carbon in soils. We elaborate on these benefits in our factsheet.

As EU organic movement, we highlight the need to recognise and support organic farming as a farming system that protects and improves soil health.
