BIOFACH 2022
The most important yearly appointment of the organic movement worldwide, BIOFACH will take place on 26-29 July 2022. At the fair, organic operators from across the supply chain, organic association representatives and decision makers and many more meet, exchange and learn. IFOAM Organics Europe contributes to the BIOFACH programme with several sessions that will zoom in on policy, regulation and research. During the session we will interalia discuss the CAP national strategic plans’ alignment with the Farm to Fork strategy and its potential for the development of organic. A special focus will also be given to the New EU Organic Regulation, how it fits to the new political ambitions and its implementation in the EU and beyond also in view of renegotiation trade and organic equivalency agreements.

Experts from the U.S. and E.U. will discuss current policy initiatives from their respective governments that aim to combat climate change. Each speaker will give a brief presentation on current U.S. and E.U. climate policies that include agriculture. The session moderator will lead a discussion on U.S. – E.U. policy collaboration, followed by audience Q & A.

Some inputs in organic agriculture have come under increasing criticism in recent years and will probably be handled more restrictively. The Horizon 2020 projects RELACS and Organic-PLUS will present own research results regarding alternatives to contentious inputs and discuss to what point it makes sense to replace them with substitutes and when a complete system redesign is rather necessary.

The Commission’s Farm to Fork strategy calls for an EU target of 25% organic land by 2030, leading to significant growth of organic certified surfaces. Meanwhile, new technologies and the current pandemic are shaping the usual organic certification system toward a remote one. Therefore, representatives from the organic movement will discuss the future of organic certification.

The EU Commission wants to revise the European genetic engineering law. The aim is to allow more genetic engineering while at the same time implementing the precautionary principle and freedom of choice. Squaring the circle. Where does the political process currently stand? What (bogus) arguments are being used to deregulate? And how can the organic sector contribute to keeping fields and plates free of genetic engineering?

The European Commission has published a carbon farming initiative and is working on a regulatory framework for the certification of carbon removals. During this session we will explore the realistic potential of soil carbon sequestration, the challenges and need for environmental safeguards as well as the opportunities for the organic sector.

Tech-enabled innovations in the agri-food sector can ensure traceability in complex supply chains, optimise compliance audits (e.g. hybrid solutions), benchmark sustainability schemes etc. Drawing on the latest market developments, this session will show how digital technologies can strengthen local and small-scale food businesses. Topic-related EU projects such as SmartAgriHubs will be introduced
