Last Commission consultation before presentation revised Sustainable Use of pesticides Directive

On 5 October, Mathilde Calmels, IFOAM Organics Europe’s Policy Coordinator on Pesticides, Natural Inputs and Fertilisers, will be one of the speakers of the Commission’s stakeholder event on the Sustainable Use of pesticides Directive (SUD) 2009/128/EC.

This is the final in a series of three public Commission events gathering stakeholders’ feedback on the SUD’s evaluation and impact assessment of its possible future revision. The day will focus on the external study contractor presenting draft findings of its evaluation and impact assessment work. As IFOAM Organics Europe we will have the opportunity to present our views and reaction to the results of this study, together with 10 other stakeholders.

The SUD, crucial to achieving Farm to Fork (F2F) strategy’s goals
As the SUD is the EU’s main legislative tool to reduce the risks and impacts of pesticide use on human health and the environment, its revision is a major challenge to achieve the F2F strategy’s pesticide reduction target.

IFOAM Organics Europe has been involved all along the stakeholder consultation process on the SUD revision promoting organic agriculture as the most efficient option to reduce pesticide use.

What comes next
The Commission’s legislative proposal for a revised SUD is expected in early 2022. This will launch the co-decision procedure between the European Parliament and the Council, in which IFOAM Organics Europe will remain strongly involved.
