We are very excited to meet you at the Organics Europe Youth Event 2024, on 8-9 July in Bari, Italy. Below you can find all the information you need for your participation at the event. Let’s get together for a more sustainable future!

1. How to get there

The event is hosted at the campus of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute (CIHEAM) of Bari, located at Via Ceglie 9, 70010 Valenzano (BA).

1.1 Getting there: fixed-schedule shuttles

Event organisers will provide you with scheduled shuttles between Bari Airport/Bari centre and CIHEAM Bari campus. The shuttle will only be circulating between the airport and Hotel Federiciano and CIHEAM Bari campus.

Instructions for the shuttle pick-up: The driver will wait for OEYE participants at the airport arrival gate, holding a sign with the event’s logo. If you plan to take the shuttle to the CIHEAM Bari campus, please find the driver and board the bus.

1.2 Getting there: public transport

From the airport

If you are unable to take the shuttle, you can reach the event’s location from the airport via public transport:

  • Take bus number 16 right in front of the airport.
  • Get off the bus at the “Bari Centrale” bus stop right in front of the central train station.
  • From there, take bus number 04.
  • Get off the bus at the “Ceglie 6C/Agronomico” stop.
  • Once there, you will see the CIHEAM Bari campus on your left.
  • The trip should take a little more than one hour and a half. See the route here.

From Bari’s central train station

To reach the event’s location from the “Bari Centrale” central train station

  • Take bus number 04 right in front of the station.
  • Get off the bus at the “Ceglie 6C/Agronomico” stop.
  • Once there, you will see the CIHEAM Bari campus on your left.
  • The trip should take around 40 minutes. See the route here.

Bus tickets can be purchased via sms – find the instructions on the AMTAB company website.

2. Your choice, your learning!

2.3 Learning lectures

On 8 July, between 16:00 and 17:30 you will attend learning lectures offering parallel, knowledge-based sessions designed for educational purposes. The learning lectures are divided in two blocks with two lectures each and participants can choose to join one lecture for each block.

Round 1, 16-16:45

  • 1.1 Unlocking opportunities: Youth and access to land. Moderator: Jean-Marc Louvin – Food Expert / Campaign Coordinator, ICLEI ES. Moderator: Laura Sauques – Policy coordinator at IFOAM Organics Europe
  • 1.2 Sustaining communities: The potential of Biodistricts in nurturing rural vitality. Speakers: Hilde Straub – Regional Manager, Bio-Musterregion Biberach; Patrizia Pugliese – Senior Researcher, CIHEAM Bari.

Round 2, 17:15-18:00

  • 2.1 (Bio)diverse agriculture: Bringing intersectionality and queerness to the land. Speakers: Jessica Ariel Donham – Coordinator of the Gender and Intersectionality Working Group at Agroecology Europe; Natasha O. Ervilha – founder of Queering Agriculture. Moderator: Cristina Laurenti – Coordinator of the Youth Network, Agroecology Europe / Researcher, FIBL.
  • 2.2 Growing forward: Farming in the digital age. Speakers: Emre Gurdal – Veterinarian, Arif Gurdal Dairy; Vincenzo Verrastro – PhD, CHIEAM Bari. Moderator: Helene Schmutzler – Policy Coordinator on GMOs and Animal Welfare, IFOAM Organics Europe.

2.2 Parallel sessions

You can choose which learning lectures & parallel sessions to attend during the event. No need to decide now, just mentally pick your favorite of each block and be ready to dive in!

On 9 July, you will be able to attend parallel sessions. Two blocks of parallel sessions are offered: parallel sessions 1. features three sessions and parallel sessions 2. features four simultaneous interactive parallel sessions, each with an unique and engaging focus. You can choose one session from each block to join.

Parallel sessions 1, 10:15-11:30

  • 1.1 Organic content creators, practical ways to make organic attractive with an organic content creator. Speaker: Marina Grölz – Farm Manager, Agriculture & Member of the Delegates Assembly, Naturland e.V. / Co-founder of Junges Naturland. Moderator: Boglarka Bozsogi – Communication and Policy Officer at Agroecology Europe
  • 1.2 Open innovation: how it can support young people in innovating their organic business at both process and product level. Speakers: Giusy Miuli – Researcher and Consultant, CIHEAM Bari; Ivana Cavoski – Course Coordinator, CIHEAM Bari.
  • A.3 Leadership workshop: Creating young organic leader’s network. Speakers: Cristina Laurenti – Scientific Collaborator, Department of Food Systems Sciences, FiBL & Coordinator of Agroecology Europe Youth Network; Lennart Bertels –  Junges Bioland e.V. Vorstand. Helene Schmutzler – Policy Coordinator on GMOs and Animal Welfare, IFOAM Organics Europe  

Parallel sessions 2, 12:00-13:15

  • 2.1 Fostering local food democracy: Exponents of the Italian Local Food Policy Network. Speakers: Giampiero Mazzocchi – Researcher, Council for Agricultural Research.   • 2.2 Living Labs: as enabling ecosystems and strong support for innovation in both rural and urban areas. Speaker: Dolinda Cavallo – Project Manager, European Network of Living Labs. Moderator: Francesco Notarangelo 
  • 2.3 How can young people play a role in Sustainable Public Procurement? Speaker: Sabina Nicolella – Sustainability expert Fondazione Ecosistemi. Moderator: Jean-Marc Louvin – Food Expert / Campaign Coordinator, ICLEI ES 
  • 2.4 Just food: migrant labour and human rights in the food system. Speaker: Ernesto Gibba – La Bolina. Angelo Cleopazzo – Vice President, Diritti a Sud. Moderator: Maria Zintl – Policy Officer on inputs and organic textiles.

4. Check in and out of the CIHEAM campus accomodation

A guard is available 24/7 to assist guests with their accommodation at the campus. No additional information is needed beyond what the campus has already received from you. Simply state your name at check-in to receive your room key or at check-out to return it.

5. Registration at the event

On 8 July, we invite you to register your attendance at the participant’s registration desk between 13:00 – 14:00.

6. Event’s programme

7. OEYE activities by BEING ORGANIC in EU

The BEING ORGANIC in EU project will introduce you to two exclusive networking and learning opportunities on 8 & 10 July. Find more detailed information here.

7.1 Being Organic Mind Mingle – a competitive networking meet-up not to be missed

Before the official start of the event, you are invited to join our special networking meetup ‘Being Organic Mind Mingle’ by the Being Organic in EU project. All participants are invited to this activity where they will have the opportunity to know each other and challenge their knowledge of organic.

When: 8 July, 10:00-12:00

7.2 Dive into the local organic food production on our field trip

Participants who chose to attend one of the two excursions, to the The Andriani project pasta factory and the Cuonzo Organic Farm olive oil mill should keep in mind the subsequent practical information:

  • Excursion buses will depart sharply at 8:00 AM on 10 July from CIHEAM Bari campus. Participants who wish to have breakfast before the excursion should plan accordingly.
  • Field visits will be conducted in English.
  • On the return trip, buses will stop at the airport around 13:00. If you wish to be dropped off at the airport, please check out from your accommodation before the departure to the excursion and bring your luggage with you to the excursion bus, as you will not be returning to the campus anymore.
  • For those not stopping at the airport, the drop-off point will be CIHEAM Bari.

8. Social and networking activities

8.1 Evening programme

You will be able to relax by engaging in an evening of fun and entertainment, which will include:

  • Local folk dance show & music by Tamburellisti di Torrepaduli.
  • Engaging dance hall: participants will have the opportunity to try out the dance moves of Pizzica – a popular folk dance typical of the Puglia region.
  • Organised networking games will take place. More information during the evening.

When: 8 July, 21:00-23:00

8.2 Outdoor yoga – a return to nature

You have the option to attend yoga sessions during the event.

Yoga is a millennial practice that helps to balance and harmonize your body your mind and your emotions. It acts on every aspect of the person: physical, mental, emotional, psychic and it is entering more and more into the daily habits of people, thanks to the countless benefits that can bring to people’s life quality. Practicing yoga in the open air, immersed in nature, allows you feeling the embrace of nature, listening the breath of the Earth and reconnecting you to your deeper self. The session will greatly amplifies a well-being feeling.

A meditation session will conclude the practice.

When: 9 July, 7:30-9:00

Practical information:

  • We will be doing yoga in the garden, therefore we suggest the attendees to bring a beach towel and wear light and comfortable clothes (barefoot preferably or socks).
  • If you wish to join the yoga session and you purchased breakfast, please make sure to have it before the start of the session

9. Event takeaways

We invite you to share your key takeaway from the event. This could include impactful statements from speakers during panels, lectures, or sessions, as well as moments of networking and socialization with other participants. Additionally, you can vote for your favorite takeaways shared by others. Based on these votes, we’ll select the top 10 takeaways to be the official ones for the Organics Europe Youth Event 2024. These 10 takeaways will be presented during the closing ceremony and shared online with our members.

How it will work: This link will lead you to an online tool where you will be asked to share your key takeaway from the event. You will also be able see other participants’ takeaways and vote for your preferred one. Please remember that the final 10 takeaways will not necessarily match individual participant responses but will incorporate multiple perspectives from different participants.

10. Meals
  1. The following meals are included for all participants to the event as indicated in the programme:
    • Lunch on 8 July 
    • Apero & dinner on 8 July
    • Lunch on 9 July
    • Lunch during the excursions
  2. If you are staying at the CIHEAM Bari campus, you also have the option to purchase breakfast at the campus. Breakfast will be served from 7:00 to 9:00.
  3. The campus canteen is closed on Sunday. If you arrive on 7 July, you should arrange their own meals, either by exploring catering options in the nearby village of Valenzano or by bringing their meals to the campus.

11. Parking

For participants arriving by car, free parking is available inside the campus. Detailed instructions will be provided by the campus guardians at the entrance (24/7 service). To reach the parking area, simply navigate to CIHEAM Bari’s address: Via Ceglie, 9, 70010 Valenzano BA, Italy.

12. What if I cannot attend?

In case your plans change and you are unable to attend the event, please notify us as soon as possible so that we can offer your seat to someone on the waiting list. Kindly note that a no-show fee of 200€ will apply if we are not notified of your absence at least one week prior to the event start date.
